The Story Behind Everlastings
Lorette Velvette's songs begin long before the first lyric is written. They often arrive as images—a dream that keeps slipping away, something glimpsed from the corner of her eye, a movement behind the barn, a rustling along the edge of the woods, or a flower growing where it wasn't expected. Alone, these moments seem ordinary. They linger. Together, they begin to speak to her. Life on the farm has quietly shaped the way she sees the world. There are days when Velvette will stop what she's doing and walk across a field because the changing light has revealed the landscape in a way she hadn't seen before.
From that way of seeing came Everlastings, a forthcoming album produced, recorded, and mixed by Doug Easley at Easley McCain Recording in Memphis. Across twelve interconnected songs meant to be experienced from beginning to end, Everlastings unfolds as a single landscape rather than a collection of separate stories. Images echo across songs. Meanings deepen with repetition. Each piece quietly reshapes the ones surrounding it.
The album takes its title from the everlasting flowers, sometimes known as immortelles, with blooms that retain their form and beauty long after they die.
Everlastings grows from a lifetime of following an independent artistic path. From the Memphis underground of the 1980s through collaborations with Alex Chilton, Tav Falco, Dave Soldier, Moe Tucker, and longtime collaborator Doug Easley, Velvette has consistently trusted her own instincts over trends or categories. Those experiences form part of the soil from which the new record has grown. Everlastings is both the culmination of that journey and something entirely its own. Listening to Lorette Velvette's songs is less like following a plot than entering a landscape. Meaning gathers slowly. A rabbit remains a rabbit. A field remains a field. A flower continues blooming where it wasn't expected. The songs never insist on being solved. Instead, they invite listeners to slow down, pay attention, and discover for themselves the invisible threads connecting one image, one memory, and one feeling to the next.
